Turning Your Hustle into a Habit and (Dare I Say) Addiction

Do you fizzle out by Friday?

Do you dread going into your home office?

Do your toes curl up in your shoes when someone mentions your part time hustle because it only stirs up guilt that you haven’t been working it lately?

I get it. Lori Greiner (best known for her position at QVC and position as a “shark” on the wildly successful show Shark Tank) said this, “Entrepreneurs are the only people who work 80 hour weeks to avoid working 40 hour weeks.” It takes a lot of gumption to get ‘er done. But what if you could turn that thing that’s weighing you down into something that makes you soar? Let me show you how to fly.

You can follow a formula to make your work addictive. In fact, if you scroll your Facebook with any regularity, you’ll recognize these key factors because they’re part of why social media is so addictive.

There are 5 keys to human behaviors that make anything fulfilling and compelling. If you’re missing any one of these, it’s possible that a tune up would change your entire perspective.

Significance- Are you making a difference? Is a family living in a beautiful home because you rehabbed it? Is someone going to dump that thorn-in-their-side-property because you made an offer on it? Work isn’t always about what you get out of the deal; sometimes it’s more rewarding to figure out how you’re changing lives.
FIX- Change your perspective. Find significance in your work and let that fuel you.

Certainty- Like most people, you want your expectations met at least some of the time. If you never have a level of confidence in your business, you’re closer to giving up than you think.
FIX- Learn from people who’ve successfully done what you’re trying to do. Get coaching. Find small successes along the way and use them as motivators for bigger gains in the future. Sometimes it’s just a matter or reminding yourself that you’ve succeeded in the past at something you never thought you could do. Just remember, if you can’t rely on yourself to show up and do what’s needed, you business won’t have certainty. It starts with you.

Variety- This is a key driver as to why people purchase lotto tickets. More than the chance of money, we like to dream that anything is possible, and so we throw our spare dollars away at a 1 in 13,983,816 chance at taking home the jackpot. Without variety, monotony sets in, and with it, we don’t feel fulfilled, let alone driven.
FIX- Try something new in your field. Venture out on a limb. Make mistakes. Reach. You don’t have to give up and backpack Europe to find variety. Have you always flipped houses? Why not try brokering a deal. http://leearnoldsystem.com/lp/catalog/broker-certification/

Progress- You need to move forward, or you’ll never feel rewarded. If you go to the gym and you aren’t breaking a sweat on the treadmill, how are you going to expect results? Without a physical change, you’re not going to feel fully satisfied with your daily habit of cardio. Don’t plateau. Push!
FIX- Progress requires pain. If working out was easy, everyone would do it. If reaching the level of success you aspire to didn’t require effort, everyone would see progress. If you can’t figure out how to make progress, find a mentor to push you along.

It’s easy to feel sharp when you never do any work.

Connection- There’s a reason I encourage you to attend 2 networking events in my weekly “Rule of 56.” You need connectivity; you need others to drive you forward when you’re feeling isolated behind the phone or the wheel of your car. The need to forge connection is one of the many reasons I host so many events all over the nation. If you don’t have a connection with others, it’s hard to be fully committed to your work, or let it influence you.
FIX- Get together with like-minded people! Your greatest influencers are the top 5 people with whom you spend most of your time.

To see beyond the “work” and to the heart of the “why” takes practice and persistence, but pays off in the end, rewarding you with enough motivation to do what is needed and more.

Look, maybe you won’t need all of these key factors to make your work addictive. But I bet at least one resonated with you like a gap in your business structure. Find a way to change that, and you’ll be saying, “It’s five o’clock already?” way more often.
